Amazing Photo: Double Rainbow Over Wyoming

Wyoming resident Jonmikel Pardo took this spectacular photograph of a double rainbow on Sep. 1. from his backyard in Lander, Wyo.

“It was just after a fast-moving thunderstorm passed through,” he told OurAmazingPlanet. “There was a break in the clouds just as the sun was about to set behind the mountains. The break was large enough to allow the full sunlight through and the rainbow was incredibly bright, even more so with the dark storm surrounding us.”

Fog Bow Over Ocean Beach

What is being seen is a fogbow, a reflection of sunlight by water drops similar to a rainbow but without the colors.

Eclipse over the Temple of Poseidon

Credit & Copyright: Chris Kotsiopoulos & Anthony Ayiomamitis

The Moon moved to partly block the Sun for a few minutes as a partial solar eclipse became momentarily visible across part of planet Earth.

In the above single exposure image, meticulous planning enabled careful photographers to capture the partially eclipsed Sun well posed just above the ancient ruins of the Temple of Poseidon in Sounio, Greece.

Unexpectedly, clouds covered the top of the Sun, while a flying bird was caught in flight just to the right of the eclipse.

Blue Flash From The Sun

by Mario Cogo

Difficult to observe, the momentary green flash above the rising or setting sun has been documented as a phenomenon caused by the atmospheric bending or refraction of sunlight.

Like a weak prism, the Earth’s atmosphere breaks white sunlight into colors, bending red colors slightly and green and blue colors through increasingly larger angles.

When the sky is clear, a green flash just above the sun’s edge can sometimes be seen for a second or so, when the sun is close to a distant horizon.

Auroras, Startrails, Rivers, Oh My!

A sequence of photos from Cameron River, near Yellowknife in northern Canada, resulted in this surreal image of the trailing stars and dancing aurora. The light of the Full Moon near the horizon is scattered through the clouds and in the sky.

Glorious Iridescence

by Philippe TOSI

A wonderful closeup vividly showing an assortment of iridescent clouds above altitude. When parts of clouds are thin and have similar size droplets, diffraction can make them shine with colours like a corona.[*]
