California Marijuana Dispensary Trades Pot for Food to Feed the Hungry | ABC News
For the second year in a row, one California medical marijuana dispensary is doing its part to feed the hungry by offering their patients a trade: one free joint for every six cans of donated food.
“We’re in a really controversial industry, and we wanted to show that we’re here for good,” says Nancy Black, sales manager at the Granny Purps dispensary in Soquel, Calif.
The dispensary is running its unique food drive for the second year in a row, trading joints — Black calls them “pre-rolls”— for donated food.
There is no limit to the number of free joints a single customer can receive. +

Rising seas expected to wash out key California beaches
The effects of climate change will wash away iconic beaches by century’s end, along with millions of dollars in real estate, roads and tax revenues.
An illegal, Orwellian violation of free-speech rights? Or just a smart tactic to protect train passengers’ safety from rowdy would-be demonstrators during a busy evening commute?
The question resonated Saturday in San Francisco and beyond as details emerged of Bay Area Rapid Transit officials’ decision to cut off underground cell phone service for a few hours at some stations Thursday. Commuters at stations from downtown to the city’s main airport were affected as BART officials sought to tactically thwart a planned protest over the recent fatal shooting of a 45-year-old man by transit police.
Two days later, the move had civil rights and legal experts questioning the agency’s move, and drew backlash from one transit board member who was taken aback by the decision.
“I’m just shocked that they didn’t think about the implications of this. We really don’t have the right to be this type of censor,” said Lynette Sweet, who serves on BART board. “In my opinion, we’ve let the actions of a few people affect everybody. And that’s not fair.”
The Pot Republic: One Sheriff’s Quietly Radical Experiment
“Some people are watching this right now shaking their head saying, ‘I can’t believe there’s a cop in uniform that’s working with marijuana people, and to those people I just say, listen. The voters have passed the law. The longer we build up hurdles and we build up laws, then the more money we’re going to be spending in court to ultimately be told to get over it. So the Mendocino County Sheriff’s Office, we’re over it, and we’re trying to make it work.”
”We can do this the easy way and you can take us to your house to look around,” Rivera claims the deputy said, “or we can detain you for six hours while we get a warrant and go to your house and shoot your dog.” +
As California prisoners enter their fourth week of a historical mass hunger strike, literally dying for human rights, although California Department of Corrections Department (CDCD) secretary said Tuesday, that he would order staff to force-feed inmates if necessary to save lives, Nancy Kincaid, Communications Director for California Prison Health Care Services stated Wednesday that prison medical staff will not force-feed prisoners and inmates have the right to die for the cause, their five demands. Governor Jerry Brown has not intervened after CDCD officials said Friday they would not negotiate with the prisoners.

Catch of the Day: Butts-n-Bits - Venice Beach, CA
To bring some attention to ocean pollution and just how disgusting it really is, Surfrider Foundation teamed up with Satchi & Satchi LA to create “Catch of the Day.” Simply and brilliantly, they collected actual trash from beaches around the U.S., packaged it like food, and left it on display at farmer’s markets

”The effort to legalize hemp farming in California is heating up again, and unfortunately, law enforcement interests are still doing everything in their power to stand in the way:
Last week the California Narcotics Officers’ and Police Chiefs Associations announced that they oppose Senator Mark Leno’s hemp farming bill, SB 676. Their opposition letters were sent less than 24 hours before the hearing in Agriculture Committee and featured incorrect and outdated arguments against the bill….
The bottom line is that hemp is food, not drugs. If you have a problem with hemp, you’re anti-food, and the very notion of being anti-food is so staggeringly absurd, it could only emerge from the perverted fantasies of paranoid, overzealous drug warriors.
Leaving aside all the other reasons that marijuana prohibition promotes widespread waste, suffering, and idiocy, the simple fact that a healthy food plant is banned because it looks like pot is so intellectually and economically devastating that undoing this one insane injustice would by itself constitute sufficient grounds for making marijuana legal.”
