Wild Flower under the Milky Way

“This flower is called Primula Denticulata and is located at 1500-3000m above sea level in northern part of Yunnan, China. I had strong desire to take a macro image of these flowers and it took me an hour hour to find them. Putting the camera on the slope, focusing, composition and lightning were all very difficult but the worst thing is shortness of time to moonrise. I had to leave soon.” — Jeff Dai

Admiring the Galaxy

It is difficult for even the most seasoned astronomer to resist taking time out of a busy observing schedule to stop and stare up at the gloriously rich southern sky.

This image is a self portrait taken by astronomer Alan Fitzsimmons, who took this photo between observing sessions at ESO’s La Silla Observatory.

This bold photo shows the contrast between a simple, still and dark figure on Earth and the brilliant and bright starry night sky. In this picture, the sky is dominated by the enormous splash of stars and dust which make up the centre of the Milky Way, our home galaxy.

Stars above Lights

Stars in the constellations Cygnus and Lyra (left), and Draco (middle-right)a appear above the city lights of Innsbruck, embraced by the Alps.

The clean air and good sky transparency above this capital of Alps still allow to see starry sky from the mountains at the edge of the city while light pollution has vanished away the sky of the most major cities around the world. The city light has strongly illuminated the inversion layer. — Christoph Malin

Moon Halo over Halo Island

“The colorful 22-degree atmospheric halo of the moon is captured together with planets Venus and Jupiter over the strait of Hormuz in the Persian Gulf, Well known because of political tides over the middle east region.

The name Hormuz is an island in this area. Hormuz is a piece of Paradise, believed by local citizens of the island. The island has a historic castle and eye catching natural scenes, but nowadays most of the people doesn’t even know there is an island that the strait named after it; The island is faded in memories like a halo. The yellowish lights on the horizon belong to Qeshm island. While the week I was in Hormuz island I saw halo moon every night, considering high evaporation rate during days its not a hardly seen phenomenon in Hormuz.” — Mahdi Zamani
